Step by Step

I don’t want to get up. If I get up, I have to get ready. If I get ready, I have to say goodbye. A wild fluttering comes from my balcony. I get up to find a robin stuck in the sticky liquid that keeps pigeons from roosting. I step outside to help but the bird panics, flapping its wings violently. I hold it, keep it still, and free its broken legs. When I let go, it drops straight down. I bury its little body by a tree. Then I go back upstairs and get ready for my father’s funeral.
