Lying in Wait

“Did you close the garage door?” It’s midnight, and we’re in bed. He’s watching fishing videos on his phone and I’m half-asleep and squinting into the semi-dark. “Yes.” “Are you sure?” I start to get out of bed. “If you go check, I’m filing for divorce,” he says, joking but also maybe not. I lay back down while he gives me a suspicious side-eye. He goes back to scrolling. I close my eyes and pretend to drift off to the lullaby of spinning reels and cries of “fish on!” I’ll wait until I hear him snoring. Just to make sure.
