Making the Cut

Dad held up the envelope with one word printed on it: Yes! I told him, “It isn’t a big deal; the school pretty much takes everyone.” He said, “Not a big deal? My son going to college not a big deal?” After I opened the letter, he took it from me. I thought he was joking as his mouth struggled, sounding out words a third grader could read, but then he gave up after the first sentence and handed it back. I said, “You know, not everyone makes it,” but it was too late. His joy had been cut short.
