I walk down the refrigerated section, curious about the pre-packaged meals and their French, gourmet-sounding names. A glass jar of sauerkraut leaps to my senses. Thoughts of pungent, vinegary goodness come to mind, and saliva collects under my tongue. My dad had visited me in Alsace last Christmas on his way to Kenya. He led me toward his favorite sauerkraut restaurant, but it was closed. Oh, well. Next time! We would eat sauerkraut from his favorite restaurant after he came back from his trip in March. He didn’t come back. And now I’m in the refrigerator aisle, unable to swallow.
