Beaming Bridge

With three school-aged children, our family squeezed in a trip over winter break despite the expected frigid weather. On a dark December night, we romped in snow boots through Paris, delighted by the shimmer of snowflakes falling crosswise in the glow of street lanterns. My youngest, her new purple beret tilted above one eye, pulled me across the cobblestones. “We have a surprise!” she squealed. Our kids beamed when my husband knelt in the same spot on the Pont Neuf where he’d proposed 18 years earlier, the bridge brightened by boisterous giggles, and the three extra twinkles in his eyes.
